The content is yours. The design holds.

Every site I build comes with an editor where you control all of the content: text, photos, prices, opening hours and whole new pages. What you cannot reach is the layout and the structure, which is why the site still looks right after two years of changes. The screenshots below are from the real thing.

Three steps, always the same three

It makes no difference whether you are fixing a typo or putting the price up. The route is identical and it takes under a minute.

You open the thing you want to change

Down the left is your website as a list: the rooms, the questions, the news, the pictures. You click the one that needs changing. No code, no folders.

You type straight into the field

The fields are named after what they are: name, price, description, photo. Underneath each one it says what it does and where the change comes out.

You press Publish

Nothing happens before that. The change sits as a draft until you publish it, and then it is on the site. No waiting, no emailing me.

The editor itself, screen by screen

Gistihúsið Fell is invented and its rooms do not exist. Everything else is real: this is the system that gets installed for you, with your content in place of theirs.

What you see when you log in

The left column is your website as a table of contents, not a database. It is arranged around your site, so the things that exist once sit at the top and the lists you add to sit below them.

One room, open

Name, price per night, number of guests. Under the price it says what that figure does: it updates both the website and the booking system, because this is the one document they both read.

Text and photos in the same place

The description is an ordinary text box. A photo goes in by dragging it onto the area. If you want a room off sale for a while you untick it, and it comes off the site without being deleted.

A change is a draft until you publish it

Here the price is changed to 24.900. The badge turns orange, the field is marked, and the Publish button wakes up. The live site is still showing the old price. You can back out.

The badge goes green, the button goes quiet and the system says when it published. The new price is on the site and in the booking form at the same moment.

The lists you add to yourself

Questions, news and offers all work the same way: you add an entry, write in it and publish. If you also have the assistant, it reads these same questions, so you answer in one place instead of two.

What you change, and what you do not

That is deliberate. An editor that lets you change everything is an editor that lets you break the site.

One thing worth knowing up front

The fields themselves are labelled in Icelandic and so is the help text under them, because I write those. The system around them is in English: the button says Publish, not Birta, and Upload, not Hlaða upp. Sanity, which sits underneath, ships no Icelandic translation and I am not going to tell you otherwise. In practice it is five or six words you learn on the first day, but you should know it before you sign rather than after.

If something is unclear three months later, I answer it. That is included, not billed by the hour.

Some people never want to touch this and that is completely fine. You send me a line and I update it. The system is still there if you change your mind.
